The three paint drying milestones

Paint drying is not an instant single event. It occurs in three major chemical phases:

  • **Dry to Touch**: The paint film is no longer sticky to a light brush of the finger. Liquid solvent has mostly evaporated, but the film is still soft underneath.
  • **Dry to Recoat**: The coating has hardened enough to accept a second coat. Applying a second coat before this window is reached will reactivate the first layer, causing it to tear, bubble, or slide off the wall.
  • **Full Cure**: The chemical binder has fully crosslinked and achieved its maximum hardness and durability. Until cured, the paint is susceptible to scrub marks, washes, and scuffs.

Environmental extremes

Standard laboratory curing tests are run at **70°F (21°C)** and **50% Relative Humidity**. High humidity blocks solvents from evaporating into the air, and low temperatures slow down the chemical polymers from binding.

*Rule of Thumb: Do not paint if the ambient temperature is under 50°F (10°C) or if relative humidity is above 85%. Doing so risks moisture entrapment and chemical bonding failures.*
