Primer Selection Guide: Shellac, Alkyd & Acrylic Primers Explained

A common temptation among DIYers and rushed painting crews is skipping the primer coat or relying entirely on so-called “Paint & Primer in One” products on raw surfaces. While self-priming topcoats work well on existing, previously painted sound surfaces, skipping a dedicated primer on challenging substrates frequently leads to catastrophic paint failure: peeling, flaking, uneven sheen (“flashing”), tannin bleed, and rust bleed-through.

Primers serve fundamentally different chemical functions than finish topcoats. Understanding when to prime and choosing the correct chemical chemistry is key to achieving a long-lasting coating job.


1. Topcoat vs. Primer: Key Differences

  • Finish Paint (Topcoat): Formulated with high-grade color pigments and resins designed for UV resistance, washability, abrasion resistance, and aesthetic sheen (eggshell, satin, semi-gloss). Topcoats lack deep penetration bonding resins.
  • Primer: Formulated with high vehicle solids and specialty binding resins designed to penetrate porous substrates, seal suction, provide mechanical adhesion to slick surfaces, and chemically neutralize stains.

2. The 3 Primary Primer Chemistry Types

Selecting the correct primer chemistry depends on the substrate material and the problem you are trying to solve:

3. When Primer is Absolutely Mandatory

You must apply a dedicated primer in the following 6 scenario situations:

  1. New, Bare Drywall & Joint Compound: Unsealed joint compound absorbs liquid topcoats at different rates than surrounding paper, causing visible dull spots (“flashing”). Use a dedicated PVA (Polyvinyl Acetate) Drywall Primer.
  2. Raw Wood Siding & Trim: Natural wood contains water-soluble tannins (especially cedar and redwood) that bleed through water-based paint as yellow-brown stains. Use an Oil-based or Stain-blocking Primer.
  3. Glossy or Slick Surfaces: Paint will not bond to slick oil enamel, polyurethane, tile, or laminate without mechanical profiling or a High-Adhesion Bonding Primer.
  4. Stained, Fire, or Water Damaged Walls: Water marks and soot contain soluble contaminants that migrate through latex topcoats indefinitely. Use a Shellac or Solvent Stain-blocking Primer.
  5. Dramatic Color Shifts: When transitioning from dark burgundy or deep midnight blue to stark white, apply a Gray-Tinted Primer (Shade 3 or 4) to cut topcoat requirement from 4 coats down to 2.
  6. Ferrous Metal (Iron/Steel): Uncoated steel oxidizes immediately when exposed to moisture in latex paint. Apply a Rust-Inhibitive Primer.

4. Calculating Primer Quantity & Coverage

Primer spreading rates differ from finish coats because unsealed porous surfaces absorb more liquid during the initial coat.

Primer Spreading Rate Standards:

  • Smooth Sealed Drywall: 350 – 400 sq ft per gallon
  • Raw Porous Drywall / PVA Primer: 300 – 350 sq ft per gallon
  • Textured Plaster / Cement Render: 250 – 300 sq ft per gallon
  • Raw Wood Siding: 250 – 325 sq ft per gallon
  • Rough Split-Face Masonry: 150 – 200 sq ft per gallon

Calculation Example:

For 1,500 sq ft of new textured drywall:

Gallons Required = 1,500 sq ft ÷ 300 sq ft/gal = 5.0 Gallons

Add a 10% safety margin (5.0 × 1.10 = 5.5 gal). Purchase 1 x 5-Gallon Pail and 1 Single Gallon Can of PVA Drywall Sealer.


5. Pro Tips for Primer Application

  • Tint Your Primer: Ask your paint supplier to tint the primer to 50% of your topcoat color. This ensures uniform color coverage and eliminates thin spots.
  • Never Sand Primer Smooth to Bare Wood: Lightly sand primer with 220-grit sandpaper after drying to knock down raised wood grain, but avoid sanding back through to raw wood.
  • Check Recoat Windows: Allow oil primers to dry a minimum of 8 to 12 hours before applying acrylic topcoats to prevent solvent entrapment and blistering.
