Wet Film Thickness (WFT) vs Dry Film Thickness (DFT): Measurement & Formula Guide

In industrial, marine, and commercial painting, quality control relies heavily on film thickness measurement. Whether applying protective epoxy on steel bridges or elastomeric coatings on concrete facades, applying coatings too thin results in premature rust, pinholing, and coating breakdown—while applying coatings too thick causes solvent trapping, sagging, mud-cracking, and extended curing delays.
Two key measurements govern coating inspection: Wet Film Thickness (WFT) and Dry Film Thickness (DFT).
1. What is Wet Film Thickness (WFT)?
Wet Film Thickness (WFT) is the liquid coating thickness measured immediately after application, before any solvent or water evaporation occurs.
- Unit of Measurement: Measured in mils (1 mil = 0.001 inches = 25.4 microns) or microns (µm).
- Testing Standard: Measured according to ASTM D4414 using a wet film notch gauge (also known as a comb gauge).
- Purpose: Allows applicators to verify immediately during spraying or rolling whether enough material is being deposited to hit the engineered dry specification.
2. What is Dry Film Thickness (DFT)?
Dry Film Thickness (DFT) is the thickness of the coating film after volatile solvents have completely evaporated and the resin has cured or crosslinked into a solid film.
- Testing Standard: Measured according to ASTM D7091 or SSPC-PA 2 using non-destructive magnetic or eddy-current gauges (for metallic substrates) or ultrasonic gauges (for wood and concrete).
- Purpose: Serves as the ultimate quality assurance benchmark specified in architectural and engineering project spec sheets.

Because solvent content evaporates during drying, DFT is always smaller than WFT. The exact relationship depends directly on the coating’s Volume Solids Percentage (% VS).

4. Accounting for Thinner / Reducer Additions
When painters add solvent or thinner to improve flow, leveling, or spray atomization, the total volume of liquid increases without adding any extra solid resin. This dilutes the volume solids percentage and requires a higher WFT to achieve the target DFT.

Practical Industrial Calculation Example:
An industrial maintenance epoxy specifies a target DFT of 5.0 mils.
- Manufacturer Volume Solids = 65%.
- The painter adds 10% solvent thinner by volume to spray smoothly.
Step 1: Calculate WFT without thinning:
WFT = 5.0 ÷ 0.65 = 7.69 wet mils
Step 2: Calculate adjusted WFT with 10% thinning:
Adjusted WFT = [ 5.0 × (100 + 10) ] ÷ 65 = (5.0 × 110) ÷ 65 = 8.46 wet mils
Result: The applicator must apply 8.5 wet mils with the comb gauge to guarantee a final cured film thickness of 5.0 dry mils.
5. How to Use a Wet Film Comb Gauge (ASTM D4414)
- Press the wet film comb gauge firmly into the freshly applied wet coating perpendicular to the substrate.
- Hold for 2 to 3 seconds, then remove the gauge straight out without sliding across the surface.
- Observe the teeth (notches) under adequate lighting.
- Read the WFT Value: The wet film thickness lies between the highest wetted tooth and the lowest unwetted tooth.

6. Common Film Thickness Defect Guide
